Engage customers in healthy behaviors
Most of the customers who purchase our client’s insulin pump system have lived with diabetes for a while—many their entire lives. Usually they’re relieved and excited about the extra support this device provides.
But the device alone can only do so much. The person wearing it must still take ownership of his or her health. So this company asked if we could help their customers get the most value out of the insulin pump and also motivate them to engage in healthy behaviors.
Our expertise in behavioral economics—combined with our state-of-the-art Quantum360™ solution—was exactly what was needed to help make a difference for their customers.
An exclusive club with rewards-based motivation
We developed a three-pronged solution. First, we created a membership program for the company’s insulin pump customers and invited them to join. The online program provides ongoing education, motivation and inspiration for people who are managing diabetes. The membership aspect creates a sense of prestige and exclusivity and fulfills the desire to be part of a like-minded, supportive community that understands the struggle of living with diabetes.
Next, we added a gamification element, giving members the chance to earn points by meeting certain goals—from watching an informative video, to taking a quiz, to keeping glucose numbers within a healthy range. The points-based challenges are fun and motivating and they keep members owning their health, feeling proud and getting rewarded for their healthy choices. Members redeem the points they earn on an array of health-related merchandise—anything from smoothie blenders to workout headphones to running shoes.
The final key to this successful program is an ongoing stream of valuable content, encouraging tips and fresh challenges to keep members engaged, informed and coming back consistently.
Providing an ongoing value
Ultimately, the goal of the program is to increase one of the most important measurements in the diabetes community, known as “time in range”. For people with diabetes, to be “in range” is to have healthy glucose levels. The more time they can spend “in range” each day, the healthier and safer they can be.
Because this pump tracks time in range for its customers, the company is able to tell if that measurement is improving or not. The results are clear. Pump customers who join the program have more time in range than those who don’t. And the longer customers are in the program, the more their time in range numbers continue to improve, month after month.
